Houston is a thriving metropolis of 7 million people. It’s the 4th largest city in the US, with the most diverse population, surpassing New York City. Why does everyone love living here? Read on, and discover what makes Houston the best city in the US. By the time you’ve finished, you’ll be packing your bags.

Affordable Housing

For many people, the American Dream involves owning a home. Unfortunately, housing prices in many US cities are astronomically high. Not so in Houston. It’s not difficult to find a gorgeous family home in the suburbs for under $200k. For $300k you can get the house of your dreams in a great school district. The Houston metro is a housing smorgasbord. Find your family home in Houston today.

Healthcare

Throw a rock in any direction and you’ll probably hit a world-class health care facility. Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. TMC is also home to the world’s largest children’s hospital and cancer hospital. If that wasn’t enough, Texas Medical Center is the 8th largest business district in the United States. No matter where in Houston you reside, you’ll have access to world-class medical care.

Education

The Houston metro is home to some of the best school districts in the state. Katy ISD, Pearland ISD, Friendswood ISD and Clear Creek ISD are all top-tier districts, located in suburbs with affordable family housing. Living in Houston also provides in-state tuition to all the state universities. Have your pick from esteemed choices like Texas A&M, Texas Tech, the University of Texas and the University of Houston. Houston is also home to the prestigious Rice University.

No income tax

You read that right! There is no income tax in Texas. The Texas state constitution includes an article forbidding the taxation of income. Texas ranks 34th out of 50 states for total tax burden. This means if you live in Texas you won’t be overly burdened by taxes.

Jobs

Having no income tax is irrelevant if you can’t find a job. Good thing you’re moving to Houston, where the economy is thriving. If you work in the medical field, Houston is a job mecca. Energy, education and aerospace are also huge players in the Houston job market. If you can’t find the job of your dreams in Houston, you can easily create it. Business regulations in Texas are limited, which makes the whole state prime for small businesses. In fact, it was rated the most small-business friendly state in America.

Entertainment

You will never run out of things to do in Houston. It’s literally impossible.

Museums

The museum district includes world-class museums like the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, along with one of the top-rated children’s museums in the country.

Performing Arts

If the museum district doesn’t suit you, try the theater district where you can catch operas, musicals, plays and more. If ballet is your thing, the Houston ballet is one of the premier ballet companies in the US.

Sports

You’ll love watching the World-Series-Champion Houston Astros beat their opponents at Minute Maid Park. Catch a Texans football game in the fall, take your family to a heart-pumping Houston Rockets basketball game or cheer on Houston’s professional soccer teams—the Dynamo men’s team and the Dash women’s team. Sports are a year-round pastime in Houston.

Parks and Rec

Houston is home to incredible green spaces downtown, like Discovery Green and Hermann Park, and winding bayous throughout the metro area. Kayak to your heart’s content, grab your binoculars and go birding down in Galveston County or attend a community yoga class held at a city park.

Beaches

Galveston Island is about a 45-minute drive from downtown Houston. Park along the seawall (or park right on the beach in some areas), and spend your day enjoying the temperate waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Festivals

It isn’t a stretch to say there is a festival every weekend. From crawfish and shrimp festivals, to one of the most famous Mardi Gras celebrations in the US, it’s always party-time in Houston.

NASA

The Johnson Space Center resides in the Clear Lake area, and provides fun and education for all ages. Climb aboard a replica space shuttle, and stand feet away from the tallest, most powerful rocket ever made—the Saturn V.

Climate

Houston’s humid sub-tropical climate may cause some unwanted bad hair days, but it also allows gorgeous tropical plants to flourish. Plant some hibiscus flowers and a banana plant or two, and voila!  Your backyard is a tropical paradise. Another bonus: You’ll never have to worry about clearing snow off your driveway in Houston. Be prepared to make your friends jealous every winter.

Food

You absolutely can’t talk about Houston without mentioning food. Barbecue, Cajun and Tex-Mex are all Houston staples, but it doesn’t end there. Houston continuously churns out James Beard-award winners and nominees. If you want to taste food prepared by the most talented chefs in the United States, come to Houston and take your pick.

Southern Hospitality

There’s some debate as to whether Houston qualifies as a truly “Southern” city. Some say yes, some say no. Either way, you can’t deny the hospitality is impeccable. Don’t be surprised if you get a homemade pecan pie as a welcoming gift from a friendly neighbor. If you need to borrow a cup of sugar, there will be 10 people willing to lend you the sugar, plus a container of their famous gumbo. Kids and adults alike will refer to you as ma’am and sir. If you’re from a non-Southern state, this may feel odd at first, but you’ll grow to find it charming and respectful. Just don’t judge us by our drivers…no one’s perfect.

It’s Home

You never feel like a fish out of water in Houston, because it’s home to hundreds of thousands of transplants from all over the world. Chances are you’ll bump into someone from your hometown if you’re here long enough. Houston welcomes anyone and everyone. Before you know it, you’ll be hosting your own crawfish boil and cheering on the Astros with everyone else.
